Quick Tips for Washing Winter Clothes

If you want your winter clothes to last from season to season, it is important to take care of them. You can maintain the appearance of your clothing with a few easy tips. Depending on how frequently you wear your winter clothing, caring for it properly will increase its longevity. Here are some washing and care tips to help you:

Hand Wash All Hand-Knitted Sweaters and Scarves

Your delicate clothing should be hand-washed with a little dish soap. They only need a small amount, and the soap won’t harm the fibers. Your sweaters and scarves will keep their form and appearance if you take the time to hand wash them. However, avoid twisting these garments as doing so can damage the fabric.

Machine-Wash Down Jackets

Machine-wash down jackets or coats made of a down alternative twice every season. Spend 30 minutes soaking the down coat in your washer’s cold water and detergent. Be careful not to distort the jacket when squeezing out extra water after washing on the mild cycle. Dry on low, with a few tennis balls to fluff.

Treat stains right away:

You could be feeling sleepy right now because of that hot cocoa, but if you don’t take action fast, it might irreversibly stain your precious wool sweater. Once they have dried, stains on wool are far more difficult to remove. Act quickly to have your winter clothing looking like new.
Wash Hats, Scarves, and Gloves in a Zippered Laundry Bag

Once a month, wash these items, then lay them flat to dry. The bag will keep gloves in pairs and stop scarves from tangling up with your other items.

Deodorize Foul-smelling Snow Boots

Add 1 capful of laundry detergent, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and cold water to a bucket. The boot inserts should be removed, soaked in the solution for 30 minutes, then properly rinsed and hung to dry. Before replacing the insoles, use a soapy cloth to wipe the boots’ exteriors and sprinkle a little baking soda inside.

Caring for your winter clothes will help you maintain them without causing much wear and tear. If you end up putting some of them in storage for the summer, having them properly cleaned will prevent odors and keep them looking their best.
